The Treetop Walk in the Bavarian Forest National Park

More than just a treetop trail

Discover the forest wilderness of Germany’s oldest and largest national park. Recharge your batteries, draw new courage and take home memories for life – the treetop path and the egg tower in Neuschönau show the mixed Bavarian mountain forest of the Lusen National Park Centre and its living worlds in a whole new dimension.

The lookout tower

The lookout tower

The Baumei – respect for what came first

In the middle of the eternal forest waves of the Bavarian Forest stands an egg! The 44-metre-high observation tower of the Treetop Walk in the Lusen National Park Centre owes its nickname to its unique architecture.

The surprise awaits inside: The Baumei frames a group of ancient firs and beeches. Gently protected from the wind by the wooden structure, but well supplied with sunlight, they grow in competition with each other.

On the way to the viewing platform, the tower pathway shows a new perspective on the group of trees and the surrounding national park round after round. It is designed in such a way that wheelchair users and families with prams can also use it comfortably.

Once at the top, you are rewarded with an incredible panorama: over the Rachel and Lusen mountains, the lush green sea of the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests and, on a clear day, even as far as the northern main ridge of the Alps.

The tower in numbers

  • Length of the footbridge in the tower: 520 metres
  • Tower height: 44 metres
  • Maximum gradient: 2 – 6 %
  • Total weight of egg tower: 520 tons

The path

The Treetop Walk Bavarian Forest : Feel boundless freedom

Fresh forest air rushes into your lungs and the term mighty trees is tangible for the first time – they are, literally awesome.

The Treetop Walk in the Bavarian Forest National Park lets you walk 8 to 25 metres above the forest floor and shows you the wonders of the forest from above. Where it gets difficult for some on hiking trails, the treetop path opens doors: wheelchair users and older people stroll just as comfortably in nature as families with prams. Parents almost automatically always have their children in view thanks to the fixed path and can enjoy nature. Balconies with educational games and climbing stations provide ongoing adventure in nature.

The trail ends at ground level in front of the doors of the Hans Eisenmann Haus, where an indoor Lusen for climbing, cinema and exhibitions on the Bavarian Forest National Park await young and old explorers.

The trail in numbers

  • Total length: 1300 meters
  • Length of the trail to the Baumei: 780 meters
  • Length of the footbridge in the tower: 520 meters
  • Path height: 8 to 25 meters
  • Height of access tower/elevator: 10 meters
  • Length of bridge: 28 meters

The learning and activity stations

The learning and activity stations

Get to know nature better with learning and activity stations

Along the path and on the forest island, young and old explorers will find learning games and information boards that playfully impart knowledge about the mixed mountain forest in the Bavarian Forest National Park, its plants and animals.
By seeing and feeling, you will gain insights into the following topics:

  • Biological diversity of the mountain forest
  • The process of decay in the primeval forest
  • Tree crown research
  • The battle for light

At the activity stations, you have to overcome balancing beams or wobbly elements – and all that at dizzy heights.
The balconies with skill and climbing games provide fun and thrills for the family outing.

The forest island

The forest island

The forest island – a footbridge into the sea of treetops

Opened in 2015, the Forest Island is a 270 square metre wooden platform at a height of 20 metres. It extends the path with a rest area and picnic spots for relaxing moments in the middle of the treetops of the Bavarian Forest. The highlight is the lattice lounger, a kind of hammock in the middle of the treetops with an unobstructed view down!

Dog

Are dogs allowed on the Treetop Walk in Neuschönau?

Are dogs allowed on the Treetop Walk in Neuschönau?

Dogs* or animals of any kind are unfortunately not allowed on the trail, not even on a lead or in a bag.

In addition to the hygiene aspect, the safety aspect (for animals and humans) plays a major role in the ban on animals on the trail. Most responsible owners keep a safe eye on their animal, yet dogs can show unexpected social behaviour towards strangers and also towards other animals. A fear of heights in dogs can also trigger flight behaviour. Unfortunately, the narrow path width offers neither retreat nor escape possibilities for animals or for people with any fear of animals.

*Exception: companion dogs for the disabled and assistance dogs.

However, there are dog crates with fresh water available on the grounds, which you can use free of charge. You can get info about this at the ticket office.
